San Clemente Open Championship
The 1st Annual San Clemente Open Championship began with a 10:30 a.m. shotgun start and was open to the public, welcoming golfers of all skill levels. Participants enjoyed a full tournament experience for a $99 entry fee, which included a post-event fajitas buffet. Competitors were grouped into ABC flights based on handicap, and prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each flight. The A Flight champion earned the honor of being placed on the Shorecliffs trophy plaque displayed in the clubhouse, while additional winners received notable prizes such as free golf for a year or a complimentary foursome with lunch. As the inaugural event, it marked the beginning of a new community golf tradition in San Clemente, bringing together local golfers, club regulars, and new participants for a day of friendly competition and celebration.
Rules and Format
The tournament followed an individual stroke-play format, ensuring a fair and competitive environment for all participants. A valid USGA-approved handicap was required for entry, and golfers were placed into flights based on their handicap range:
- A Flight: 0–7 handicap
- B Flight: 8–15 handicap
- C Flight: 16–30 handicap
Each flight recognized top performers with awards for the top three placements. The event emphasized integrity, sportsmanship, and adherence to USGA rules, creating a smooth and enjoyable competitive experience for everyone involved.
